One stamp, 4 different mediums.

Do you ever buy a stamp and wonder how you can get more use out of them? When I buy a stamp I try and think of different ways I can use it to create lots of different designs, so that I know I will get good value out of it.

Today I am sharing a little project I set myself to really stretch the ways I can colour a flower stamp. I decided to colour one stamp with 4 different colouring mediums, to explore how they can create different looks with the same base image. I stamped the image with the same metro grey nuvo hybrid ink on the most optimum card stock I had for each medium. What is your favourite colouring medium?

Surprisingly I think my favourite turned out to be the one coloured with alcohol markers! I've been trying to improve my colouring with them over the past few months and I'm really enjoying colouring with them now. I love the control I have with them in getting all the little details in the stamp. I really like how bright the card turned out because of them.

My least favourite is probably the one I coloured with soft pastels. This was my first ever time using them, so perhaps I am doing it all wrong. They were given to me secondhand from a relative and I finally found time to try them out. By the end of colouring I had learnt about blending them a little but I don't think they are best suited for colouring in something within the lines. Overall the result is quite dull but it might work better for creating different textured backgrounds.

One of my other favourite mediums to colour with is watercolour.  I think watercolours are better suited for lighter coloured pallets, rather than this one I chose. I prefer watercolouring embossed images as it really helps the image pop. I used both my watercolour pallet and pencils for this image.

Finally I attempted to paint the image with acrylics. I am very much a novice at acrylic painting, but I learnt very fast that this was going to be a lot more abstract that the other mediums at staying in the lines. I quite enjoyed painting the leaves, as I could get a lot of shape and texture with my brush.

The flowers were another story as the lines were quickly covered up by paint. If I was to attempt this again I think a smaller acrylic brush would have been helpful, as I could have taken more time to colour a petal at a time. I had to try and remember how with the petals were shaped, roughly. In some ways it was quite freeing after staying in the lines for so long with the other mediums. I really like the final colour and texture that the acrylic paint allowed me to achieve.

All in all I enjoyed the challenge and think the final cards would make a nice gift set for someone who also enjoys art. Thank you for visiting :)

  3. I prefer my promarkers too or water colouring with distress inks/oxides, seeing all yours together is an excellent comparison, even the acrylic one has it's own arty style which is growing on me all the time! Steph x
